I want to work and travel in Australia. How do I start?
If you are a British passport holder, aged 18-35 with no dependants, you may be eligible for a an Australian working holiday visa (subclass 417). It's valid for one year, and you can apply for a second and third year. It's usually a fairly simple process, and you can apply online!
There's additional criteria in which your application will be judged, such as criminal record, health status and your available funds.

What do I need to do before I arrive in Australia?
As someone who's done the WH visa, I know it can get overwhelming in the planning stage. To keep it simple, here's your basic tasks:
Apply for and be accepted for your visa
Decide where in Aus you'd like to start.
Decide on what kind of accommodation you want and get it booked.
Pack your bags and get your UK affairs in order.

What do I do when I arrive in Australia?
Unlike a holiday, living abroad requires setting up your life again and learning all the rules of another country. It's not as difficult as it looks, and I go through it all in detail in my blog. Here's what you'll be working towards then you first arrive:
Apply for a tax file number (TFN)
Get an Australian phone number
Get a transport card (state specific)
Get an Australian bank account
Do your RSA (responsible service of alcohol) course if you want to work in hospitality.

What would my visa restrictions be?
The working holiday visa (subclass 417) rules can be a little complicated and they change regularly, but here's some must knows:
You cannot work in the same place for more than 6 months (many exceptions apply)
You must enter Australia within 1 year of your visa being granted, and your work holiday year begins when you first enter the country (not when the visa is first approved).
British citizens not longer need to do 88 days of specified work to be eligible for year two WH visa (from July 2024)
